In May 2012, The Urban Vocal Group received Arts Council funding to develop song writing skills. In Our Own Words gave our young singers the opportunity to write and record their own material and gain an understanding of the creative processes involved. The project
- Encouraged them to develop their own songs, using their own voices and lyrics
- Encourage collaborative work between new and professional artists
- Helped them to deconstruct a song, looking at tempo, structure, genre, lyrical content and musical patterns.
- Gave them the tools to help them put their lyrics and ideas into songs.
- Gave them the opportunity to watch and learn from outside artist and writers.
- Provided recording and performance opportunities for all involved.
11 new works were produced covering a range of genres including Rock, RnB, Rap and Indie and can be found Here. Many of the young musicians used the skills learnt and the experience to further their careers within the music industry.
